Ghawar in Saudi Arabia — about 280 by 30 km, discovered in 1948, with cumulative production beyond 65 billion barrels and current output near 3.8 million barrels per day. Counting unconventional regions, the US Permian Basin produces more in aggregate (~6 Mb/d) but is thousands of separate shale wells rather than one field.
Roughly 500 "giant" fields (>500 million barrels) hold about two-thirds of all discovered oil, and a few dozen supergiants dominate production. This concentration is why the market obsesses over a handful of places — Ghawar's health, Permian growth rates, Iraqi expansion — rather than thousands of small fields.
The great conventional giants are mature — most were found before 1980, and many produce with water or gas injection to maintain pressure. But "mature" is not "empty": enhanced recovery keeps adding life, and Ghawar has been declared near-death repeatedly for 40 years. The bigger shift is that new supply increasingly comes from shale and deepwater rather than new conventional giants, which have become rare finds.
