What is fracking, in simple terms?

Hydraulic fracturing: pumping water, sand and a small share of chemicals into a well at high pressure to crack open dense shale rock, with the sand propping the cracks open so trapped oil and gas can flow out. Combined with horizontal drilling — steering the well sideways through the shale layer for a mile or more — it unlocks hydrocarbons that conventional wells can't touch.

Why did fracking change the oil market?

It turned the US from a declining importer into the world's largest producer — from ~5 million barrels a day in 2008 to the records of today, on top of making the US the biggest gas and LNG exporter. Shale's fast response (new wells in months, not years) also capped OPEC's pricing power: sustained high prices now summon US supply.

Is fracking dangerous?

The main documented risks are local: methane leaks, water contamination from faulty well casings or surface spills (rather than the frac itself, which happens far below aquifers), heavy truck traffic and noise, and induced earthquakes — mostly linked to wastewater injection wells rather than fracturing. Regulation and practices vary widely by state, and the climate footprint hinges largely on controlling methane leakage.

Why is fracking banned in some places?
